If you haven’t heard of BYD yet, we’ll forgive you. But if you’re unsure about the meaning of my title, then it’s time to start paying attention. As the undisputed sales leader in China’s new energy vehicle market, every BYD model is a hit, deeply loved by consumers. In late 2023, BYD surpassed Tesla, the “giant of electric vehicles,” to become the world’s largest seller of electric cars. The phrase “Tesla killer” has been around for years. Today, let me introduce you to the uniqueness of this Seal.

Why do they call it a seal?

BYD currently has two sales networks: the Dynasty Network and the Ocean Network. The models sold by these two networks are different, and BYD’s Seal IP has been popular since its inception. As a natively designed pure electric vehicle launched by BYD, featuring a rear-wheel-drive design, the Seal is a model meant to compete with Tesla’s Model 3.

The car’s appearance also resembles a seal. Based on the younger, more renewable “Ocean Aesthetics” design concept, the Seal inherits the essence of the Ocean X concept car, with a sharp look, a low-slung stance, and an ultimate sense of sportiness. Don’t the two small whiskers on the front of the car resemble a seal’s mustache? Now you see why it’s called Seal.

I chose the eye-catching Sky Purple color. Every time I drive this car out, I get many people turning their heads, filling me with pride.

Seal’s Space: Comfort and Practicality Combined

The interior is also filled with oceanic elements. The dashboard features “wave-riding” smooth lines and designs reminiscent of ocean waves. The crystal gear lever is another highlight, along with surrounding mechanical buttons that integrate commonly used functions such as start buttons, driving mode selection, air conditioning, and audio control, collectively forming a control hub called the “Ocean Heart.” The official says its design inspiration comes from water droplets in the ocean.

In terms of space, the BYD Seal also excels. With dimensions of 4800x1875x1460mm and a wheelbase of 2920mm, it provides ample space inside. The trunk capacity is 400 liters, sufficient for daily storage, and there’s also a hidden storage space and a front trunk, further enhancing storage capabilities.

A 60-70 kg Seal eats 7-8 kg of fish a day. No wonder this car is called Seal; it also has a big appetite.

Seal’s Speed: Outstanding Performance

Seals are strong swimmers, capable of speeds up to 17 miles per hour, and are adept at diving. Southern elephant seals can dive to depths of 1,200 meters, while northern elephant seals can dive to 1,500 meters.

This BYD Seal also has impressive capabilities. The 2025 Seal comes in four configurations. The top-of-the-line Seal Excellence AWD version offers a maximum pure electric range of up to 404 miles. It has two motors with a total power of 530 horsepower. It’s very fast, and BYD isn’t shy about boasting about it. The car’s 0-60 mph acceleration time is marked as “3.8” on the rear. This version adds a motor on the front axle, making it all-wheel drive. It’s faster than comparable models like the BMW i4 eDrive30 and Tesla Model 3 RWD, with more than enough performance.

From a coasting mode suitable for highway driving to a one-pedal driving mode suitable for stop-and-go city traffic, I absolutely love it.

It’s worth mentioning that when I close the door, I can’t hear the engine’s sound anymore. Perhaps that’s a good thing?

Seal’s Body: Ultimate Safety

Seals in the ocean have streamlined bodies, which provide great convenience for swimming in the water. Their subcutaneous fat is thick, providing protection against the cold in colder regions.

Similarly, this BYD Seal boasts ultimate body technology advantages on the road. It’s a safety body structure specifically designed for pure electric vehicles, based on the technical advantages of the e-platform 3.0. Compared to traditional body structures, the CTB (Cell to Body) battery-body integration technology can more effectively leverage the material’s inherent strength advantages. Regardless of which version you choose, its 80 kWh (usable) Blade Battery provides excellent performance and range. The Blade Battery is BYD’s self-developed power solution, where battery cells are arranged in thin blades, meaning higher energy density in a smaller space. It has undergone N-level safety tests, including fire, penetration, and compression. BYD has tested everything you can think of.
